Summertime Fire

Ah, summertime! It is a season when people gather to celebrate all kinds of different occasions or just to have a good time. I’ve noticed that these kinds of get-togethers will often involve grills, campfires, or even large bonfires. We even celebrate our nation’s birth with fireworks! Even with electricity, fire remains a part of our lives in various ways. While fire is beautiful, even awe-inspiring at times, it is also dangerous and to be treated with respect.

In Hebrews 12:28-29, the author states: Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire. This metaphor comparing God to a consuming fire is certainly fitting. Just like fire, God is beautiful and awe-inspiring, but also like fire, God is powerful and dangerous, and we need to respond to Him with reverence and respect. If we choose not to respect God, then, just like with fire, we will end up getting burned! So, first, be safe this summer, and, second, every time you see fire, be reminded of this passage and worship the Lord with reverence and awe!
