Hall of Fame

The NFL season is almost over; there is just the “big game” left to be played. But, before that  on February 6 during NFL Honors, the league will announce the latest inductees into the NFL Hall of Fame. At the Hall of Fame ceremony in August, each new member will receive a gold blazer, a diamond-encrusted gold ring, and a bronze bust of his likeness that will be on display at the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Regarding all of this hoopla, especially the bronze bust, many sports commentators will speak of these individuals as being “immortalized” by this great honor. However, we know that this is not true immortality.

In 1 Corinthians 15, the Apostle Paul writes at length concerning the topic of resurrection, both Christ’s and ours as His followers. In verses 50- 53, Paul writes: Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable. Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. Gold blazers can be eaten by moths, and bronze busts can tarnish, but one day we will experience true immortality when we are resurrected with imperishable bodies to dwell with the Lord forever!
